I suffer from an online addiction so powerful that it's cured me of online stock trading: I'm a devoted collector of food and wine books. And in the past year, I've picked up scores of hard-to-find titles through eBay, the Internet auction house—gems like a 1912 edition of Julian Street's Paris à la Carte for a piddling $5, volumes from Time-Life's Foods of the World series, and, for $7, What's Cooking in France, a 64-page booklet by Louisette Bertholle and Simone Beck, published in 1952, nearly a decade before they collaborated with Julia Child on the legendary Mastering the Art of French Cooking.

Company Online Stock Trading The downsides are few. Yes, I've had to scroll past hundreds of less compelling titles—Weight Watchers Favorite Homestyle Recipes or Campbell's Microwave Cookbook, anyone? And I've occasionally found myself glued to the screen for hours in a bidding war for some choice item, desperate to fend off a last-minute trump by another cyber-culinarian. But the thrill of finding rare or useful books, often at reasonable prices, has been worth it. Also, fraud and default don't seem to be problems in this quiet corner of the eBay universe—as reflected in the site's ''Feedback Forum'', where buyers and sellers post brief, usually hyper-enthusiastic assessments of one another (''Great transaction! Would deal with again!''). A tip: After browsing these virtual bookshelves, you may need to get a few real ones to hold your trophies. To bid for cookbooks online through eBay, the Internet auction house, go to www.ebay.com; the Books, Movies, & Music link will guide you to the cookbook lists.
