The National Marine Fisheries Service is releasing the fifth edition of Our Living Oceans: Report on the status of living marine resources (1999).

"This comprehensive evaluation shows where the agency has been successful in halting the decline of or rebuilding fish and marine animal stocks, and also points out areas for improvement."

It also includes the status of nearshore stocks managed by coastal states and interstate marine fisheries commissions and several highly migratory stocks governed by international laws and multilateral treaties. Additionally, the report assesses the status of species protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act.
