Integrated 10G ADM from CIENA Drives Down Cost of High-Bandwidth Metro, Enterprise Multiservice Networks
New Integrated 10 Gbps SONET/SDH ADM for ONLINE Metro Further Enables Cost-Effective, Switched SONET/SDH and Data Services
LINTHICUM, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 2004--CIENA(R) Corporation (Nasdaq: CIEN) today announced the addition of a 10-Gigabit SONET/SDH Add/Drop Multiplexer (SADM) card to its ONLINE Metro(TM) Multiservice DWDM Platform. Available today, the new feature enables service providers and large enterprises to lower the costs of deploying high-bandwidth, switched SONET/SDH and data services, saving as much as 55 percent versus traditional multi-platform solutions.
As part of CIENA's ongoing efforts to grow its portfolio of high-bandwidth solutions and enable Core to Door(TM) service creation and delivery solutions, the added 10G functionality on ONLINE Metro is the next step in network evolution for SONET/SDH transport solutions. CIENA will display ONLINE Metro in booth #23815 at SUPERCOMM in Chicago, June 22-24, 2004.
CIENA's ONLINE Metro now leads the industry with support for 10 Gbps SONET/SDH ADM functionality utilizing integrated transponders, allowing carrier and enterprise customers to flexibly scale their SONET/SDH service offerings to cost-effectively meet growing end-user demands. In particular, with integrated DWDM optics and optionally transparent muxing capability that supports SONET/SDH overhead transparency on a single ADM card, the ONLINE Metro 10G SADM eliminates the need for separate multiservice provisioning platforms and additional service wavelengths, thereby lowering capital and operating expenses while significantly reducing network complexity.
"This integration of carrier-grade DWDM with full SONET/SDH add-drop multiplexing at 10G rates accelerates the availability of profitable higher bandwidth services closer to the edge," said James Frodsham, general manager of CIENA's Metro and Enterprise Solutions Group. "Moreover, the cost benefits and network simplification of the single solution has several government customers planning to implement this platform in lieu of deploying combined solutions."
Specifically, CIENA's 10G SADM adds full OC-192/STM-64 ADM functionality to ONLINE Metro's portfolio of 2.5G SADM service cards and complements an existing 10G SONET/SDH multiplexer for non-switched OC-48/STM-16 and data services. The new card also supports full SONET and SDH protection on both the network and services sides.
CIENA also offers 10-Gigabit Ethernet LAN PHY and WAN PHY cards for the ONLINE Metro platform. Ten-Gigabit LAN PHY enables data customers to lower capital equipment and operating costs by maintaining native Ethernet throughout private networks, while 10 Gbps WAN PHY allows direct Ethernet connectivity to legacy SONET/SDH infrastructures providing unsurpassed availability and distance support. Both solutions have been widely deployed by large enterprises, universities, and government agencies as well as by service providers as carrier-managed services.
ONLINE Metro Multiservice DWDM Platform
CIENA's ONLINE Metro multiservice DWDM platform, a combination carrier-grade DWDM system and SONET/SDH/storage/data multiservice provisioning platform, is designed for large enterprises and service providers that want to provide customers a variety of full-rate, native-protocol managed services over a robust optical infrastructure.
